Following are some reasons why you may want to consider Bamboo Floors over other available options:
- It was recently named the Green Building Material of the 21st Century
- Brazilian forests are in a state of alarm, because of the deforesting process. It takes 60 years for a common Oak to mature and when it is felled it will take another 60 years for a new one to grow. On the other hand, most of the Bamboo species take from 5 to 6 years to achieve maturity; and the final bamboo plant is left unharmed in the harvest process and quickly re-grows for yet another harvest, which makes Bamboo one of the fastest growing plant species in our planet.
- Bamboo is as hard and dense as other common woods, so bamboo floors will dent less than many wood floors. The 5/8″ thick bamboo floors are sanded/refinished up to 3 times. Bamboo hardness (density) is about 1410 (the higher the figure, the harder the density), compared with most common woods like Oak, Cherry, Walnut and Ash. It is comparable in density to the American Maple.
- Bamboo has a warm, exotic and beautiful look and feel. Lower cost, higher value! – Low or no allergic potential! It is virtually hypoallergenic.
- Bamboo is harder than Oak and many other woods, which makes bamboo a good choice when humidity and weather changes are an issue. – It is also resistant to insects that typically feed on wood.
Well, I guess you already know or at least have heard about Bamboo… but did you know it is not a tree? Bamboo is a member of the Grass Family in the botanical world.
Bamboo grows in many regions of the world, especially in warm climates where the earth is kept moist with frequent monsoon rains. Throughout Asia, from India to China, from the Philippines to Japan, bamboo thrives in natural forestlands. There are also a lot of Bamboo species that grow in many countries of South America like Colombia and Ecuador.
China has twenty percent of the world’s bamboo, much of which grows in the wild.
In this region, Bamboo is emerging as an important agricultural crop of increasing importance to the economies.
So, bamboo is in fact a grass. This fact goes a long way toward explaining several of its unique characteristics. It can mature and grow to a height of 20 meters or more in four to six years, and then Bamboo is ready to be harvested.
Like grass, cutting Bamboo does not kill the plant. The extensive root system remains intact, allowing for rapid regeneration. This quality makes Bamboo an ideal plant for areas threatened with the potentially devastating ecological effects of soil erosion.
There are many species of Bamboo. Tall and straight, Mao Zhu or Moso Bamboo are the choices for Bamboo flooring and fabrication.
Our outsourced manufacturer in the Chinese Province of Anhui uses Bamboo with 5 to 6 years of maturity as per our quality specifications. It uses Moso Bamboo, selecting the base of the stalk for its superior strength and hardness. The rest of the stalks are used to make consumer goods such as chopsticks, plywood sheeting, furniture, window blinds, and even pulp for paper products.
Some of these may be found in our online store. In the end, nothing is wasted in processing Bamboo.
When it comes to the environment, Bamboo flooring materials reflect a perfect combination of sustainable, long-lasting qualities, renewable and harvested with no harm to their natural habitat, that produce materials that help to build a healthier human environment.
